Faces and Spaces of Cockburn: Closing Drinks
Wind up drinks and nibbles at Coogee Common, 371 Cockburn Road, Coogee. Hear about this historic former hotel, and later orphanage, and have a final chat before heading home. Nibbles provided but purchase your own drinks. Opened in 1898 by Walter and Letitia Powell, the Coogee Hotel served locals as well as drawing people to a range of sporting events. It was delicensed in 1927 in the wake of stronger anti-alcohol laws in WA. From 1930 until 1968, children from the Swan Homes Anglican Orphanage holidayed and later lived at the site. Purchased by the Main Roads Department in the late 1960s for a major road to Rockingham, its heritage status and other newer roads, saved the buildings. Renovated from 2017, the Coogee Common restaurant and gardens opened in 2000. |
